Chesterfield Baptist Church

Chesterfield, SC

Our History & Facilities

Chesterfield Baptist Church was organized on March 18, 1877. Fourteen founding members first met in a house owned by Reverand A.B. Hursey, the first pastor of the church. They continued meeting there until 1883 when they moved to an old Methodist church building. The first reference to a House of Worship is found in the church minutes of June 16, 1878. The minutes read, "Resolved that we build a House of Worship within the village." The young congregation purchased property in 1886 and built a new wooden structure that was dedicated in 1893. On October 9, 1927, the church voted to authorize purchasing the property and built its current classical revival style sanctuary. An educational wing was added to accommodate over 400 in Sunday School. The sanctuary underwent modifications in 1965 to include a baptistery, paneling the organ console and piano, along with new pews and puipit furniture. The old windows were replaced with leaded cathedral windows designed by the Llorens Stained Glass Studios of Decatur, Georgia. Each window contains an emblem depicting some major event in the life of Christ. The glassware used for the project was imported from Germany. The windows were refurbished in January 28, 2020.The sanctuary and balcony have seating capacity of 300 people. The church fellowship hall will seat approximately 90 people at tables. In 1982, Chesterfield Baptist Church was listed in the National Registry of Historic Places.

New Pastor’s Role

The pastor will be the spiritual leader and head of staff at the church. Working collaboratively with the staff, the deacons, and other lay leaders. The pastor, along with the deacons, will develop and lead regular worship services, offer pastoral care to church members, plan church programs and missions, handle administrative matters, and seek the growth of the church—spiritually, financially, and numerically.

Pastoral Care

This is a congregation where relationships run deep. Chesterfield Baptist Church desires a pastor who fully becomes a part of the congregation and the community and love the people and its fellowship. We desire a pastor who interacts with our children, youth, and one who visits the home bound or hospitalized and eventually knows us by name and prays for us and prays with us.

Preaching & Teaching

Chesterfield Baptist Church people appreciate Baptist traditions in worship, including the role of a sermon that explores the meaning of God's word for living these days. We take seriously our Baptist heritage of Bible freedom and soul freedom and look for a pastor who guides us to think for ourselves and teaches us to find a way to deeper faith. The pastor leads and collaborates with the staff in preparing worship services that follow the Christian year, involve children and church members, and engage the congregation through music, prayer, and the spoken word.

Missions & Outreach

While pastoral care, preaching, and teaching are priorities for our pastor, we desire a pastor who is involved with our community and to the local ministries that our church supports. Our congregation has a rich history of ministering to "the least of these". We look forward to having a pastor to guide us in effectively telling our story through media new and old, helping to draw new people into the church, and effectively taking the church to where the people are.

Staff & Administration

The pastor will lead the team of staff leaders at Chesterfield Baptist Church and will set the tone for a new teamwork approach at our church. Administration at Chesterfield Baptist Church involves both paid and volunteer staff. It requires a pastor with the flexibility to lead where needed.

Lay Leadership

We at Chesterfield Baptist have an active group of lay leaders performing various roles at the church. This will require a pastor who can work alongside of our folks and lead and guide in their roles as needed.
